Cut-Out Stop Motion
Now available to stream online!
In the animation film “Moody’s World” Joanna Bloom explores the stop motion cut-out medium. The film is set on a half-abandoned harbor where the owner of a shiny new speedboat is challenged by a punky rat who lives and works on the harbor in a rusty old crane. The film was created by combining different techniques and materials like oil-on-glass-animation, water colours, colored pencils, objects, photographic material as well as green screen. The project aims to emphasize the story and content through its form, the visual language and aesthetic carrying a message of D.I.Y punkyness and playful innocence.
The film gently points at struggles like class, hierarchy and seperation in a humorous way that doesn’t take itself too seriously and raises questions instead of answering them.
Over 17 backgrounds and more than 10 paper puppets in different sizes were created for the purpose of the project, not including props. All of this crafting, designing and animation were done by Joanna Bloom. Voices, sound, music, and color correction were done in collaborative processes with others, including actor Malte Haas, sound designer Hebi, and music producer Ili Os. It was finished in July 2023 where it premiered at the Vernissage of the Graduation Exhibition at University of Applied Sciences Europe.
